2 suicide bombs kill 20 Afghan civilians near NATO base

Four provincial governors from the south were at a meeting at the sprawling NATO base at the airport when the attack took place, General Abdul Hameed, Afghan army commander for the southern region, told Reuters.
“The bomb exploded near the airport in a crowded area, killing 20 civilians and wounding 22,” said Ahmad Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial governor.
A spokesman for the NATO-led force said he had no immediate information.
Violence has surged across Afghanistan since the Taliban began a spring offensive in April, vowing to target the Afghan government and security forces, as well as the 130,000 foreign troops in the country.
Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, has seen some of the worst attacks.
A suicide bomber on a motorbike struck on Wednesday outside the airport in Afghanistan’s southern city of Kandahar killing 20 Afghan civilians, officials said, in one of the most serious attacks in terms of civilian casualties in recent weeks.

Back and Better: Beyonce returns to the stage

After a nine-month break, former Destiny Child singer Beyonce returns to the stage without showing signs of rustiness.
The singer who recently delivered a daughter for his rapper spouse, Jay-Z made her first performance comeback at the Revel casino in New Jersey.

Singer and music producer Solomon Oyeniyi, popularly known as K-Solo has reacted to the disparaging interview granted to a soft sell magazine by his six months old wife, Kikelomo Akinkunmi.

K-Solo reacts to wife’s disparaging interview

Although the ‘My Way’ singer refuses to respond to all the allegations unitarily, he said most of the allegations by his wife are far from the truth.
“Don’t believe all you read; things are not the way they appear,” K-Solo said. “We are just a young couple with our challenges”.
His wife had alleged, amongst other things, battery, extramarital affairs and con activities in an interview published by City People Magazine on Wednesday June 6, 2012.
A close associate of the couple who spoke on the condition of anonymity revealed exclusively to Channels Entertainment team that K-Solo had moved out of their home four months after they were married.
“He mostly sleeps in the studio now,” the source explains. “I think she has a sinister motive granting that interview because right before the interview was published, they are on the verge of reconciliation.  I saw him shortly after the interview went viral and he said he wasn’t going to make the situation more complicated by making comments because he believes she still his wife,” the source continued.
He also said that there is a pending court case between the couples which he believes will now be more complicated because of the interview.
Oyeniyi and Akinkunmi got married in November last year at a lavish Lagos ceremony.

Capital One, new sponsor of English League Cup

The league cup has called Carling Cup since 2003 when Carling took over the sponsorship of the knock-out tournament.
The tournament which is between English club sides is a less prestigious cup if compared to the FA cup but advantageous for the winner of the major cup who gets a spot in the year’s Europa league.
The draw for the 2012-2013 first round will be made on June 14.
Richard Heaselgrave, chief commercial officer of the Football League, said it is a very great way for the 2011-2012 seasons to end as sealing the deal with Capital One is good news for the League.
This year’s competition was won by Liverpool who beat Cardiff City in a dramatic final after a 2-2 score line after extra-time went to penalties.
The English League Cup known to football lovers and English Club Football lovers alike as the Carling Cup due to Carling’s sponsorship of the cup has been taken over credit card company; Capital One and will also be known as Capital One Cup from 2012-2013 as the new title sponsor for the next four seasons as the new deal has been signed and agreed upon.

Nigeria’s position in FIFA ranking improves

According to FIFA’s latest ranking for the month of June, the Super Eagles moved up by three places to the 60th spot, with 520 points.
The rise is coming after last week’s 1-0 victory over Namibia during the World Cup qualifiers, played in Calabar.
World Cup winner, Spain, maintains the lead on FIFA’s list which ranks 206-nations, while Uruguay and Germany swapped places to be second and third.
Netherlands, Brazil, England, Argentina, Croatia, Denmark and Portugal, follow subsequently.
Cote d’Ivoire is the top African nation on the list, although they dropped one step to 16th position, while Ghana is ranked 25th, dropped three places.
Other African nations ahead of Nigeria are Algeria (32, up by six steps), Libya (42, up by four steps), Mali (43, dropped four steps); Zambia (43, dropped by three steps) and Tunisia (46, up by 10 places).

Al-Farouq Aminu - basketball royalty

Among one of the pillars on which the Nigerian D ‘Tigers hope to lean on heavily in July at OQT in Venezuela will be the regal professional Al-Farouq Aminu. Royal - because Aminu can trace his roots all the way back to that of a Nigerian King. His name means " the chief that has come"
Professional - because that’s what he is on the court, a NBA Hornet.

Hope - because nothing is etched in stone yet
A member of the 2008 McDonalds All American team he almost had his career derailed when he was found guilty of shooting a pedestrian with an Air gun and was subsequently put on probation. But that was a long time ago and he has since that idiotic prank, virtually reinvented himself.
Also American by birth , he is also the younger brother to the ex Georgia Teach star Alade who currently plays in France
Aminu opted to return home to West Africa and help Nigeria in her quest to obtain one of the three remaining spots for the London 2012 Olympics. At 6 ‘8 the small forward has an amazing 7-3 ¼ wingspan and could easily be played as a power forward.
So it’s interesting to see how the Nigerians will utilize him in a mere three weeks. Not that it matters because even as a water boy he will be a plus because of his focus. With an awesome work ethic Aminu is comfortable at both ends of the floor and if he could just sharpen his shooting a little more, would be an even more vicious weapon in the D' Tigers arsenal.
Nigeria has been grouped along with Lithuania and host Venezuela.

Mourinho slams Spain after Italy draw

Sunday's 1-1 draw against Italy in the Uefa Euro 2012™ Group C opener produced bittersweet feelings in Spain.
On the one hand, their was a sense of relief that the world champions managed to battle out a draw, thanks to an equalizer from Cesc Fabregas just three minutes' after Antonio Di Natale had given Italy the lead.
However, there was also disappointment that Fernando Torres wasted several good chances at the end to give Spain victory.
"We Wasted Too Many Chances", said the headline in sports daily Marca on Monday in reference to the late misses of substitute Torres.
Marca was fairly positive about the experiment of national manager Vicente del Bosque to field an innovative 4-2-4-0 lineup without a centre-forward.
"The idea seemed to be to bring on Torres towards the end to take advantage of a tired Italian defence," Marca said. "The only thing that went wrong was that Torres missed all three of his chances."
As spoke of "A Draw Between Two Good Teams" and was full of praise for Cesare Prandelli's Italian side, especially for veterans Di Natale, Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon.
AS criticised Del Bosque for including three centre-forwards in his squad - Torres, Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Negredo - then not starting with any of them, saying that it was not a "well thought-out decision" but rather a "last-minute response" to the absence of injured striker David Villa.
"It's no use having Xavi, (Andres) Iniesta and Fabregas knocking the ball around if they do not create danger in Buffon's area," AS quoted Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, who was present in Gdansk, as saying.
"There was a great effort from the midfielders but this was rather sterile because of the lack of a forward."
The Spanish newspapers were in agreement about the poor condition of the pitch in Gdansk, with Catalan daily Sport calling it "dry, uneven and fragile."
With regards to the situation in Group C - in which Croatia are top after beating Ireland 3-1 - there is a consensus in Spain that the world champions now have no choice but to beat Ireland on Thursday.
"Thursday's game has to be a win," said radio station Cadena COPE. "Otherwise it will be a tense situation on the last day (June 18), with Spain needing to beat Croatia but also needing to depend on the result of the Italy-Ireland

Jos blast: three killed, over 50 injured

The Special Joint Task Force (SJTF) confirmed that a suicide bomber denoted a car bomb at the entrance of Christ’s Chosen Church in Rukuba area of Jos, the Plateau state capital during the Sunday morning service.
The STF, said in a statement in Jos that the suicide bomber was among the dead, while the others were believed to be victims of mob actions after the blast.
According to eye witness accounts, the male suicide bomber denoted the bomb outside the Church’s premises, and the resulting explosion led to the collapse of the Church’s building as seen in the picture.
Channels Television correspondent in Plateau state, Yemi Kosoko, confirmed that three people were killed in the explosion, while the number of those injured has risen to 52.
Residents of the state have reportedly besieged the Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where the victims are receiving treatment. Residents in the state are searching for some of their loved ones.
Amongst the victims were the elderly, women and children, who had suffered various degrees of injuries from the blast. Most are with orthopedic and lacerated injuries.
A Church elder with his son and two other people are reported to be in critical conditions and they have been referred to JUTH for urgent surgeries.
Officials of the International Community of Red Cross and Nigerian Emergency Agency (NEMA) supported the hospitals that were overwhelmed with the large number of victims.
Irate youths in Rukuba, blocked all roads leading to the Church, protesting the continued insurgent attack on Churches. The protest was however curtailed by officers of the Special Joint Task Force (SJTF) serving in the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Dipo Ayeni confirmed the suicide bombing, noted that two motor-cycle riders were also attacked by the protesting youths, but the police and officers of the SJTF were able to bring the chaos under control.
Plateau state has in recent years persistently recorded unabated bomb attacks against Churches, killing an untold number of people.
Biu attack
In what seems to be coordinated attacks, just as the bombing in Jos was going on, unknown gunmen also opened fire on a Church in Biu, a town in troubled Borno state.
The gunmen sprayed the congregation with their rifles, wounding yet to be confirmed number of people.
Hamidu Wakawa, an eye witness to the attack in Biu, confirmed the incident saying “three gunmen came to the premises of the Church and started firing at people outside the Church before going into the main building to carry on their killings….. Many people have been killed and wounded” he added.
More from Boko Haram
Fundamentalist sect Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks of suicide bombing in Jos and the shooting in Borno state, killing at least three people, while also threatening more violence.
“We are responsible for the suicide attack on a church in Jos and also another attack on another church in Biu,” a purported spokesman for the group told reporters in the city of Maiduguri in a phone conference.
“We launched these attacks to prove the Nigerian security wrong and to debunk their claim that we have been weakened by the military crackdown.”
This is coming after a suicide bomber, on Friday, detonated an explosive at the police headquarters, killing a number of police officers.
The number of people injured in Sunday’s suicide bomb attack on Christ’s Chosen Church in Rukuba area of Jos, has risen to over 50 with three lives lost.

Djourou wants Arsenal exit

The agent of Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has explained that his client is looking to leave the Emirates this summer.
The Swiss defender has been on the fringes at the Emirates for a couple of years now and he is no longer ready to wait for his chance.
Djourou wants to leave in spite of signing a new contract with the club in February that saw him extend his deal until June 2015.
The player’s representative has now explained that Italian Serie A could be the next destination for his client.
“If he (Djourou) leaves the Premier League, he will play in Italy or Spain,” agent Flavio Ferraria was quoted as saying in Daily Star.
“I saw my client the other day and he was enthustiatic about both Napoli and Italy in general.
“So far, we have received an offer worth £10m. He wants to play for one of the top five Italian clubs”.
The Swiss defender joined Arsenal from Etoile Carouge in 2002 and he was handed a first team debut in October 2004.
Despite being touted as one of the hottest prospects in world football, Djourou never quite managed to realize his full potential and has amassed just 86 Premier League appearances for the Gunners over the period of eight years.

Dana Air crash: Tinubu calls for reforms in aviation sector

image Tinubu
Former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Federal Government to spare no effort in getting to the root cause of Sunday’s Dana Air-line crash which claimed many lives. His words: “The only way Nigerians can be spared further heart wrenching aircraft disasters is for the government to get to the root cause of the problem. As we come out of the three-day national mourning, the agonies and pains of those that lost loved ones continue. Nigeria also continues to suffer a hemorrhage both in terms of lives lost and national reputation and economic attraction ruptured.
“The only way to check similar mishaps is for the government to carry out a thorough investigation into the Dana crash and immediately make public all the previous panel reports on similar air disasters. The government must, of necessity, tighten regulations and ensure standards, revalidate the operational licens-es and aircraft worthiness of all operating aircraft and enforce compliance in all aspects of air operations.”
Tinubu noted that Nigeria has had five deadly disasters in the past decade, and called on the govern-ment to sanitise the avia-tion sector for safety.
“Let me warn that we cannot afford to sleep at the switch this time. To go to sleep after a few weeks and return to our normal lives will be most tragic. The present government must put on the front burner the issue of sanitising our aviation system by ensuring that aircraft are in good shape. Also, we cannot af-ford to misplace our priorities in this matter.

N’Assembly threatens to veto Jonathan over bills

image
Angered by the seeming lack of interest in assenting to bills and implementing critical legislative resolutions, the National Assembly has threatened to invoke its powers to override such executive decisions.Section 58(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended provides for a 30-day period during which the President is expected to assent a bill passed by the National Assembly.
After the period, the legislative arm can invoke the power of veto to override the President on the bill. Briefing journalists on the first anniversary of the House of Representatives yesterday, Chairman, Rules and Business, Hon. Albert Sam-Tsokwa, lamented the executive laxity in the implementation of House resolutions despite the numerous challenges which the resolutions would have tackled, if implemented.
“More than 10 bills were returned at the end of last session. This has made us to start afresh and it is not our fault but because someone refused to do his work.
The constitution has given us the powers to override his (president) assent after 30 days of forwarding a bill to him.“But the beauty of any power is how sparingly you use it.
That is why we do not want to use it because people would say we are confronting the executive. However, if it persists we may have no option but to do so,” he stated. He, however, promised that the House would con-tinue to pass new resolutions.
Sam-Tsokwa said that the low implementation of resolutions was surprising because it was through the resolutions of the National Assembly that President Goodluck Jonathan transmuted from acting to a substantive President.
The lawmaker, however, condemned the decision of some committees to rely on ministries and other agen-cies of government for sponsoring their oversight activities.
He said that it was wrong for lawmakers going on oversight assignments to depend on the logistics provided by the ministry or organisations they were assessing.
According to him, the House received a total of 273 bills, most of which are in the second reading stage.
He also explained that the lawmakers received 278 motions and resolutions and 178 petitions.
Sam-Tsokwa said that 32 bills were passed in the last 12 months.
Also, the Senate yesterday said that it would not hesitate to veto President Jonathan if he withheld presidential assent to any bill sent to him by the present National Assembly.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang, however, noted that to avoid executive/legislative rift, the Senate had resolved to ensure that bills sent to the President, “after a rigorous process leading to their passage, are assented to.”
Enang explained that the 7th National Assembly was yet to exercise the con-stitutional power of veto on some of the unsigned bills because they were passed by the 6th National Assembly.
The Senate said it was constrained because of “effusion of time,” noting that the Assembly that passed those bills had been dissolved, Enang said this yesterday while briefing Senate correspondents on the activities of the upper chamber at the end of its first year tenure.
He, however, said because the bills were promulgated by the 6th National Assembly, the present lawmakers were constrained by the constitution and, therefore, could not challenge the President on them.
This explanation was against the recent buck-passing between the execu-tive and members of the National Assembly over the backlog of bills awaiting the President’s assent.
Enang said: “Most of the bills that assent are with-held are bills that were passed by the 6th Senate. And you will agree with me that the 6th National Assembly was dissolved on June 5, 2011 by proclamation of Mr. President and by effusion of time.
“Therefore, the Assembly that passed that bill stood dissolved and a newly inaugurated 7th National Assembly under different oath came to life on June 6, 2011 and cannot continue where the bills or action that were commenced by the previous Assembly because the life of that legislature had come to an end.
“It is not appropriate for us to call up those bills and bring them to the floor of the Senate or House of Representatives and vote on them for the purpose of voting, seeing whether we would have two-thirds ma-jority of members present for the purpose of getting those bills passed.
“The constitution has constrained us; the constitution does not allow us and we cannot do it in law because it is not the bills that were passed by the 7th Assembly.”
In his assessment of the first year of the 7th Natioal Assembly, Enang said: “The 7th Senate has recorded tremendous achieve-ments since inauguration.
“The Senate has for a number of times mediated between the Labour and the Federal Government over what could have re-sulted in industrial unrest.
“Between June 2011 and now, a total of 178 bills have been deliberated on, out of which 16 are executive bills, while the rest are members’ bills.
“Out of these 178, 122 bills are at the first read-ing stage while 19 read a second time and referred to the relevant committees. “Twenty-six others are awaiting publication in the journal, while nine were withdrawn for representa-tion by sponsors.”
According to him, the upper chamber has so far passed 21 bills and 48 reso-lutions, including those on the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, fuel subsidy probe and pension management probe.
The 7th Senate also confirmed Justice Dahiru Musdapher’s appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN; Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as Chairman; members of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, and the confirmation of appointment of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Deputy Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Sara Omotunde Alade.
The Senate has since proceeded on a break to resume legislative activities on June 19.
The House has also vowed to press on with its proposal to review the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Act, with a view to curtailing the powers of the apex bank; a proposal which has long sparked an intense debate across country and disciplines.
The Lower Chamber of the National Assembly said members were ready to pass the CBN amendment Bill in order to break the apex bank’s unfettered autonomy to create room for adequate legislative oversight and separation of powers.
Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Sam-Tsokwa said the constitution is clear on the mandate of the legislature and execu-tive, hence the House is making efforts to ensure that all organs of govern-ment conform to the dic-tates of the constitution.
According to him, “The CBN is a creation of the statute and the CBN Act is undergoing review and amendment. Efforts are being made to ensure that no agency of government budgets and implements with-out recourse to the relevant committees of the House.”
Corroborating Sam-Tsokwa’s position, Chair-man, Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Hon. Muraino Ajibola confirmed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF, that were hitherto not subjecting their budgets to legislative scrutiny did so this year.
The CBN amendment bill has generated a lot of controversies.

1.4million jobs created in 12 months –Aganga

image Mr. Olusegun Aganga
The Federal Government said it had created about 1.4 mil-lion jobs within the last one year through the implementation of reforms in the areas of trade and investment. The Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga said this yesterday during the ministerial session of the 5th National Council on Trade and Investment in Minna, the Niger State capital.
Giving a breakdown of the number of jobs that were created following the activities of the five agencies under the ministry, Aganga said lending by the Bank of Industry had created 1,335,000 jobs; the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency was responsible for 31, 122 new jobs, while the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone alone had created 30, 000 jobs.
Other Free Trade Zones under the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority are responsible for 5,120 new job openings, giving a total of 1, 401,242 jobs.
The minister also said that the ministry was currently executing matching programmes for small and medium enterprises in collaboration with the state governments to remove the bottlenecks associated with securing collateral and make it easier for SMEs to access loans to start or expand their busi-nesses.
He said: “As a result of the various reforms in the different focus areas, jobs created by the ministry’s agency in the last one year are estimated at 1,401,242 jobs as enumerated above, even though not all the jobs created are captured here.
“However, as the reforms continue, and with maximum focus on results, we hope to double this figure very soon.
“We are executing matching programmes with state governments on SMEs and deepening financing penetration, using microfinance banks; and the Bank of Industry is getting round collateral issues related with funding through cross-guarantees by members of cooperatives.
“In this regard, the value of loans approved by BOI, over the last one year, increased by 68 per cent (N77.74bn), from N114.3bn to N192.04bn. “Estimated jobs created also increased by 34 per cent (335,000) from one million to 1, 335,000 in the last one year.
“The President has also directed the Ministry of Trade and Investment, the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria to work on recapitalising BOI to increase the amount of funds available to MSMEs.”

Alleged N2bn fraud: Abuja court grants Sylva N200m bail

image Sylva
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday granted bail to former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timpre Sylva, in the sum of N100 million with one surety in like sum. Sylva is standing trial on a six-count charge of looting N2bn belonging to the people of Bayelsa State while holding sway as the state executive governor.
The high court judge, Justice Adamu Bello, who admitted him to bail, however, barred him from travelling out of the country pending the conclusion of his trial.
He said if at all he must compulsorily travel out of the country, he must obtain the permission of the court through a motion.
The court consequently ordered the former governor to deposit his international and diplomatic passports with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the high court.
Justice Adamu said the former governor must not be allowed home until he produces a surety with landed property within the jurisdiction of the Abuja Federal High Court worth the bail sum which title must be vetted by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the high court.
The court also fixed September 19, 2012 for commencement of trial in the case.
Although, Sylva was making frantic efforts to comply with the bail conditions yesterday, the operatives of the EFCC, in a civil manner, yesterday approached him to follow them to their office instead of standing for hours in the court room.
He was assured that he would be allowed home as soon as evidence of compliance with the bail conditions was produced.
Sylva has, however, filed a motion ahead of commencement of the trial, to quash the entire charge.
He was of the view that the court has no jurisdiction to try the case.
But Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, representing EFCC, yesterday dismissed the claim by Sylva as balderdash.
He said the charge against him is competent and that the commission has a good case against him.
He disclosed yester-day that barring any un-foreseen developments, he said 12 witnesses are already on queue to give evidence against Sylva.
He said there was no way Sylva would walk free out of court
